February 28, 2023 -- BackStop Neural went all-in in Las Vegas while attending the North American Neuromodulation Society’s 26th annual meeting. The conference, which is regarded as the premier meeting in the field of neuromodulation, boasted over 2,500 attendees, including clinicians, researchers, academics, and healthcare professionals. These individuals came from across the country to learn from leading experts in the field, network, and hear about the latest scientific research and technical advancements in neuromodulation.
BackStop co-founder and CMO Dr. Jason Carmel presented his research on understanding where and how to stimulate the cervical spinal cord for spinal cord associative plasticity (SCAP). Alongside colleagues from Columbia University, Weill Cornell Medicine, New York-Presbyterian, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Dr. Carmel hypothesized that subthreshold stimulation would be more effective when delivered over the dorsal root entry zone and would facilitate cortical motor evoked potentials (MEPs). Their studies found that there are indeed strong responses to lateral stimulation likely due to the proximity of stimulation to afferent axons. Moreover, there is also strong facilitation of cortical evoked MEPs by spinal stimulation, indicative of the convergence of these signals at the level of the spinal cord.
Advisor Pedro Rocha-Flores also presented a poster highlighting the development of softening spinal cord stimulating leads for neuromodulation of the cervical spinal cord. Research alongside Dr. Carmel, BackStop Neural cofounder Dr. Walter Voit, and other colleagues from Columbia University and The University of Texas at Dallas demonstrated the ability to generate MEPs in rat models using softening spinal cord stimulators with initial results demonstrating the MEP magnitude and specificity against electrode position.
CEO Connie Manz, Chief Product Officer Kial Gramley, and advisor Jim Makous joined in representing the company as well. BackStop Neural’s strong cohort secured over a dozen meetings with potential suppliers, partners, and regulatory and reimbursement consulting groups, and the team attended over 50 presentations.
Gramley commented that “the conference was a great success in that we were able to connect with multiple clinicians who were thrilled with the progress we have made on thinner, more flexible paddle leads designed for cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal cord stimulation.”
